We had a great night tonight. Some of Doug's new patients invited us over for dinner. Now, usually we wouldn't cross that line with patients. Sometimes that is very difficult in the profession he is in. We meet so many fascinating and cool people, that we would like to get to know, but Doug is the doctor, and we have to keep it separate.
However, these patients and Doug had crossed the line somehow from the beginning when they met at the Women's Show a month or so ago. She had told Doug that they were from Sri Lanka, and that they were Buddhists. Doug told her that we identify with Buddhism very strongly, even though we don't practice it. She was excited because, frankly, there aren't many Buddhists in the "Bible Belt!" They also discussed diet, which she is very into. Her college-aged daughter has some rare disease, which pops up here and there afflicting her. The best thing she has found so far is dietary changes and some sort of herbal supplement.
About a week ago now, after only two visits with Doug, she called to tell him that she was very stressed right now because her daughter was sick again, and that she couldn't even think about herself right now, and would wait to come in to see him until this passed. Doug had left his cell phone home that day, and I talked to her. I explained to her that this would be the best time for her to come in, because when you are stressed, you get subluxated very easily. She agreed to come when she could, and was very thankful I had talked to her. Yesterday, she called to invite us to dinner. So, we went, wanting good conversation and yummy Sri Lankan food, but also to talk to her more about the benefits of Chiropractic, and how it might help her daughter too.
The meal was wonderful! There was a huge spread of food, and all vegan! What a nice change to not have to cook! I love those rare occasions!
The company was even better. Their "sick" daughter was there with her roommate from college, both beautiful, intelligent, and vibrant girls! It was hard to believe that she was ever "sick." Their son, who is a senior in high school, was a very gentle person, and you could just tell he was an old soul. The three of them had a blast playing with our three kids all night, while we chatted with their parents about so many interesting things. They were such gracious hosts, and so easy to be around and talk to. We had so much in common it seemed, and genuinely enjoyed each others' company. It was like we were instant family. Our kids had a blast playing with their "babysitters" as well. It was amazing to see how quickly Grant warmed up to their son. At one point they were both crawling around through the house together roaring like little tigers. It was so cute!
The mother was so happy to see her daughter playing and forgetting all of her stress. She knows that her daughter is ill because she internalizes all of her stress, and takes on so much at school. She tries to pretend everything is fine, but then has a physical meltdown because of it. So, I jokingly suggested maybe some "play therapy" for her once in a while with my kids. They were both all about it! We also said that we would trade her adjustments for babysitting, and then she could get even more help. I think that they were all sold.
So, as I sit back, with still a full belly, I am happy that we "crossed that line" with them. I am so glad that my husband is a Chiropractor, and can change so many lives for the better! I will always be his biggest fan (and Chiropractic's biggest fan), as I know that through his hands, the Universal Powers that be (innate, or whatever you choose to call it), is connecting people to their highest inborn physical potential, and allowing the body to work it's own magic. I hope that we will see yet another "miracle" with this girl (even though I know there is no such thing as "miracles" just found answers).
