This past weekend, my family, Grandma, Aunt, Sister, and her boyfriend included, had a true family vacation at the beach. It was WONDERFUL!
We ended up in Tybee Island, GA, right off of Savannah, one of my favorite cities ever.
We were going to go to Myrtle Beach, but thanks to Doug's patient, who drives up here to see him from Charleston, she said it was "biker weekend" in Myrtle Beach, and we would be best to avoid it. Those kinds of things one can really only find out from locals. (another patient told us it was Shrimping weekend in Charleston, so we avoided that mess too!) I was relieved that we were going to Tybee, so much nicer, and less touristy than Myrtle beach.
We had a great time having an ocean front room with a balcony, and a short little walk to the beach. We hung out on the beach all day on Saturday, and we all had a blast. This usually doesn't happen with three small children and a beach, as one adult is usually always stuck watching the young one, while the others play. Now that Grant is at a more beach-friendly age, and there were 6 adults to three children, we had so much fun! We all got to do whatever we felt like, take a walk, jump in the waves, swim, play in the sand, or take a nap in the sun. It was wonderful!
The weather was perfect this time of year. It stayed around 82, and the water was still super warm for playing in. Sunday it was a little cooler as the wind picked up, and the waves were much higher and more dangerous for the kids to be in, but luckily, the spot where we were both days, had a little natural wading pool in front of it, with plenty of hard wet sand between it and the ocean. So the kids had a blast playing on their own in the 2-5 inches of water, and running on the hard sand, digging, and being chased by all of us (except Grandma of course!).
Sunday night, my Sister and her boyfriend left back to Atlanta, and Grandma and Aunt Barbara stayed in our room with us instead. Doug and I put the kids to bed, then went and had a date. There was a very nice seafood restaurant and bar at our hotel, which overlooked the ocean. We went up to the bar and had a drink (I know, me have a drink, it is almost unheard of these days!), and some crab cakes. Then we played "Miss Pacman" and just sat and talked. Then a nice walk on the beach and we sat in a beach swing for a while listening to the waves. It was awesome, and all before 10 pm!
We all spent some time in Savannah too. I love walking around Savannah. The architecture is so cool, and there is artwork and statues and squares and beautiful trees with Spanish moss everywhere. My sister and her boyfriend have never been, and Doug and I have been so many times we feel like we lived there. So, we showed them around and took them to a cemetery, and ate a snack at a cool shop, while my Grandma and Aunt went shopping in the tourist-trap section of town.
It was a great get-away, and re-confirmed my happiness that we live somewhere that we can take awesome weekend trips!
